The Jalawelo Summer Math Academy is a transformative initiative designed to support 7th and 8th-grade students in Jamaica who show potential in mathematics. This program aims to build students’ confidence and skills in math, while also equipping them with valuable study techniques that will serve them throughout their academic journey.
Held onsite at Grange Hill High School, the academy brings together expert instructors and motivated students for a one-week summer experience filled with learning, challenge, and fun. Our mission is to identify promising students early and support their success in high school and beyond—because every student deserves a fair shot at excellence. Our goal is to walk with these students through high school, giving them tools for success and helping them overcome one of the biggest academic challenges: math.
As part of our holistic approach, the academy also includes faith-based sessions centered on the theme of Imago Dei—the belief that every person is created in the image of God. These sessions are designed to help students recognize their God-given worth, potential, and purpose. By grounding our program in this truth, we aim to not only strengthen students academically, but also uplift them spiritually and emotionally.
Mathematics continues to be a major hurdle for many Jamaican students, often impacting their confidence and limiting future academic and career opportunities. Early intervention and consistent support are critical to changing this narrative.
The Jalawelo Summer Math Academy was created to identify and invest in 7th and 8th-grade students who demonstrate interest and potential in math. By combining a one-week onsite learning experience with structured pre- and post-camp engagement, the program provides a nurturing environment where students can grow their skills, develop better study habits, and build meaningful relationships with educators and peers.
Through this initiative, Jalawelo aims to lay the foundation for long-term academic success, helping students not only improve in math but also build resilience, confidence, and a vision for their future. With the added support of a back-to-school scholarship, the program reduces financial barriers and sends a powerful message: we believe in your potential.
